Theme for May: “God of Hope”

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. – Romans 15:13

Reflection
By Karen Melnick

We all want and need hope. God is concerned about that. In this verse, Romans 15:13, Paul reminds us that our God is the God of hope who wants us to abound in hope. How do we get to that point of “abounding in hope”?

Paul says that God will fill us with joy and peace as we believe in Him. It all goes back to faith and believing in Him. As we trust and lean on the Lord, relying on Him to keep us and sustain us, He fills us with His joy and peace. But wait! There’s more! He doesn’t stop with joy and peace, which we might be happy to settle with, He fills us with those SO THAT by the POWER of the Holy Spirit we can OVERFLOW with hope.

This verse is so encouraging because it reminds us that our God is the one who looks after our souls; He is our keeper. Jesus said in Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest…rest for your souls.” Our job is to come to Him, believe in Him, rest in Him. He fills us with joy and peace. He makes us abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit, who was given to us when we believed in Jesus. So come, rest in Him, be filled with joy and peace, and overflow with hope!
