Focus for November: Rest

Question of the MonthAs we head into the holiday season, what are some practical ways to rest in the LORD?

I enjoy having a daily advent reading for the holiday season. One of my favorites is Come Thou Long-Expected Jesus: Experiencing the Peace and Promise of Christmas edited by Nancy Guthrie. It helps reorient my thoughts toward Christ and the true joy of Christmas. – Annie Page

It took me over a week to write this as “life” seemed to always pull me away from sitting a few minutes to share these thoughts.  “Life” has a way of doing this – pulling, interrupting, confusing and distracting us.  During our last WMC meeting we discussed resting in the Lord and agreed that resting actually takes work.  I know – let me repeat – resting takes work.  It takes a deliberate effort to actually step away from “life” and just REST.  Not just physically putting your feet up, but mentally and spiritually.  Taking an intermission from “life” so to speak, switching gears and changing your focus.  Focus on who He is and who you are in Him – God IS who He says He IS and you ARE who God says you ARE.  Focus on His promises, His faithfulness, His love, His provision, His protection…read about Him in His word, sing about Him through hymns, lift up your cares to Him in prayer and lay down your burdens at His feet.  So many ways to rest in Him!  The main thing is that we deliberately set aside time to do just that – REST. – Julie Root
