Abiding in the Father’s Love
By Gale Puffenberger

As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you.  Now abide in My love.” John 15:9

 Some translations of this verse use the word “remain” in place of “abide”, but I have always preferred the more old-fashioned verb abide because of the image it brings to mind.  When I think of abiding, I envision a comfortable house, nestled in a garden, surrounded by blue mountains.  It is evening, and a welcoming light is in the window and I am coming home.  Abiding speaks to me of peace, security, and contentment;  not just remaining, but resting in my Father’s love.

The next verse says ”If you obey my commands, you will abide in my Father’s love, just as I have obeyed My Father’s commands and abide in His love.”  If I can abide in such a home as this, why would I ever leave?  Sadly, too often I find myself opening the door and heading down the road of disobedience.  It begins with my ungrateful heart, taking for granted the good things my Father has given me.  I feel put upon by my trials, get bored with my circumstances, grumble in discontent.  I allow things to draw my attention away from Jesus and all that I have in Him.  I stop abiding and start wandering, usually without a clue of what I am really looking for.

Thankfully, my Father doesn’t let me get too far.  He reaches out to me through His Word.  He confronts me through the wisdom and encouragement of friends.  And always His Holy Spirit calls me back to the mercy and grace that is waiting for me  because my Father’s love abides.  His perfect love for me bears all things, believes all things, never fails.  He remains the same and His steadfast love never ceases.

Jesus spoke these words of love and abiding on the night before He was crucified.  He spoke them to His disciples when He knew they would all very soon abandon Him.  But knowing their wayward hearts  He loved them with the same unbreakable love that He shared with His Father.  And His death and resurrection have brought us into that same circle of love, that same place of abiding.

My heart is just as wayward, and I am in constant need of His grace to turn me back home to Him, but I pray, “Let me dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”

Ministry Project Opportunity | Tuesday, April 14, 9:30 am {Meet in Fireside Room}
A few women have been assisting with service projects at the church on Tuesday mornings. Two tasks that we will be tackling on April 14 could use the assistance of other willing, helping hands: (1) repairing/re-upholstering the orange chairs and (2) repairing/dusting the hymnals. You need NO background knowledge/experience regarding either task – just a cheerful heart & helping hands! Karen Melnick will guide us with repairing the chairs & Amy Auker will guide us with repairing the hymnals. If you are able to assist, please meet us in the Fireside Room at 9:30 am and leave as you need to. We would love for you to join us. Contact: Annie Page

Book of Testimonies in honor of 40th Anniversary | Submit by April 15
You are invited to share your testimony of God’s faithfulness for a Book of Testimonies to be published for the 40th Anniversary. The objective of these testimonies will be to illustrate “How God has used New Life in Christ Church in Individual Lives.” The title of this book will be taken from Psalms 118:23, “This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.” Each testimony should be (1) under 750 words, (2) connected to a specific scripture, and (3) give God the glory. For example, it could tell how the Church trained you, provided leadership, or fellowship that helped direct your life or support a need. It could be your testimony of how the Church led you to salvation in Christ. Please send your submissions to Gary Mangus (sugnam@verizon.net) by April 15.
