Got Truth?
By Tamra Corbeau

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.” Romans 1:16

We first came to New Life shortly after moving to the Fredericksburg area in 2004. We had been members of a great PCA church in Warrenton, but the process of selling our house and building another had uprooted our family and shifted us around for almost a year. Once we settled in, we were eager to get back to “normal” and find a church home, and it was absolutely essential to us that we find one committed to holding out the truth of the gospel.

Before we started attending church regularly, I never thought finding such a church would be difficult. However, before finally finding our previous church, my husband and I discovered that many of the churches we looked into, and even the church we attended regularly for awhile, served up a lukewarm version of the Bible. Truth and discipleship took a backseat to warm, fuzzy feelings and messages that were careful not to make anyone feel uncomfortable. Sadly, some even glossed over difficult passages or dismissed parts of the Bible as no longer relevant in our “modern” age. I’m not suggesting this is the norm in all or even most other churches, but the frequency with which we encountered it was disheartening.

I have to confess I was a bit wary of repeating the process of finding a church all over again, but we prayed God would direct us to the right church, and New Life was at the top of our list.

While I don’t recall a lot of details of that first visit (except being warmly welcomed by Barb and Larry Plating), I do remember that by the end of the service, it was obvious we had found the right place. From start to finish, the service was Christ-centered. I do not remember the specific topic of the sermon that day, but this much was clear: New Life was a place where God’s word would be preached clearly and unashamedly, whatever the cost. I remember leaving service that day not with fleeting warm, fuzzy feelings about myself, but a renewed awe of my Savior.

It’s hard to believe it’s been almost eleven years since that first visit, and we are so grateful to have a church home where we can “work out our salvation” alongside our church family under the loving leadership of pastors and elders who are committed to preaching and preserving the truth and passing it along to the next generation to do the same.

Book of Testimonies in Honor of the 40th Anniversary | Due by May 31
New Life in Christ Church invites you to share your (story) testimony of God’s faithfulness for a Book of Testimonies the Church is planning to publish for the 40th Anniversary.  The objective of these testimonies will be to illustrate “How God has used New Life in Christ Church in Individual Lives.”   The title of the book will be taken from Psalms 118:23, “This is the Lords doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.”  Each testimony should be under 750 words, connected to a specific scripture, and give God the glory.  It is our desire that these testimonies will be an inspiration to others, provide them hope, and even lead them to the saving grace of our Lord.  Coordinator of the project is Gary Mangus.  Please send your submissions to him at (sugnam@verizon.net).  If you have any questions, contact Gary by telephone (540-785-0503).  As soon as you can get your testimony in the better; but we must have them by 31 May.  There is no restriction on age and don’t worry about your writing ability; we’ll ensure your testimony is edited and read by you before publishing.   Take this opportunity to share what God has done for you and your family through New Life in Christ Church.
