Dealing with the Source of Anxiety

Dear New Life in Christ Church Family,

John 14:27
[Jesus said,] “Peace I leave with you;
my peace I give to you.
Not as the world gives do I give to you.
Let not your hearts be troubled,
neither let them be afraid.”

In the pursuit of joy and peace the most helpful thing we can do to find it is to contemplate the glory of Jesus Christ. Fixing our thoughts on Christ is God’s provision of rest, contentment and satisfaction, and He gives it to us as the best solution to our anxious feelings.

The non-spiritual things that fixate our minds become the source of our anxieties. As they grow in our minds, we should expect that the joy, peace, and life will be sucked out of us as well. Nothing good will come when we dwell on our fears, ponder the worst possible outcomes, fixate on our concerns, rehearse dangers, complaining about our circumstances, overemphasize our ambitions, and give into our lusts. The greater these anxieties weigh upon our hearts, the more we will find ourselves spiritually dead, confused, and shrouded in darkness.

Fixing our minds and hearts on the glories of Jesus, His person, His death, and His resurrection and ascension, will help keep our souls in holiness, peace, love, power, and self-control. “To be spiritually minded is life and peace” (John Owen). Our failure to keep our minds on Jesus’ glories only makes spiritual living strange to us and keeps us from the joy, refreshment, and satisfaction available to us in the gospel.

If you want to know true spiritual power, greater love, and the peace that surpasses much understanding, fix your mind on Jesus.

Faithfully Yours,
Pastor Sean
