Theme for June: He Is My Defense

He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken. – Psalm 62:2

By Caroline Pilgrim

“Rest in God alone, my soul, for my hope comes from Him.  He alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I will not be shaken.” Psalm 62:5-6

The Psalmist’s internal dialogue has a clear prescription to us: tell your soul to rest in God as your stronghold.  I have to speak to my souls with the Word, “Caroline’s soul, your hope must be in the Lord.”  Life is busy and we can rest the wrong way with activities that distract us instead of reinforce the real source of soul’s rest.   When was the last time when you had a spare half hour you actually opened your Bible instead of Facebook (or a 25 minute Netflix episode or Pinterest)?  Do you actually go to the Word as a source of rest?  Do you actually pray and ask God to help you rest?  How do you feel when you actually rest in a promise instead of a distraction?  I love my Wall Street Journal subscription, opening up a crisp newspaper in the morning and feeling smart knowing what’s going on in politics and global news, but when I use news to distract me from my only hope, I feel depressed.  News is depressing without seeing it through God’s Word.  Psalm 42 says, “Why are you depressed, O my soul?  Hope in God.”  Stop going to empty cisterns that can’t hold water for your thirst, but go to the living water.  Go to Jesus, all you who labor and are heavy laden and he will give you rest for your soul.  Take His yolk upon you and learn from Him.  The world will find those of us who get true rest to be irresistible and will find rest with us as we rest in the God who is our stronghold.  We will not be shaken.”
