New Life in Christ Weekender
A short reminder of events happening this weekend

[Event List is Posted Below]

Dear New Life in Christ Family,

I’m baaacccckkkk! My sabbatical is O-V-E-R and I have been back in the office, back in regular meetings, and I will be back at worship this Sunday morning. I’m glad to be back.

The first thing I want to say is “THANK YOU”. I have had the most amazing 10-week sabbatical, made possible through  your love, Pastor Doug’s vision, and the encouragement of the elders. I hope that you will see the fruit of my time away in our ministry as a church.

The time away was a great challenge to me. I focused on challenging myself as much as possible. I committed to getting out of bed every day at 5 AM and working until 5 PM. I committed to exercising every day. I committed to certain milestones in the progress of my Doctor of Ministry degree. I spent my days studying, writing, and learning. I committed to spending evenings with my family and getting to know my neighbors better. I accomplished almost all of my summer goals and I hope I come back stronger than I began.

Some of the encouraging things I saw in my life: 1) deeper communion with God. I found my prayer life and my devotional life challenged and renewed. I prayed fervently for our work as a church. 2) I was mentally challenged through work on my Doctoral project. I learned a lot more about research and focusing on one topic at a time. 3) I learned how to better manage my emotions. I wasn’t ready for this discovery. Being away from the daily ministry at NLIC created an emotional rollercoaster I wasn’t quite ready for. I learned how to better control my mindset so that I could put my attention on the things that matter most. 4) I remembered how my physical health is critical to me being the best pastor I can be for you.

One verse I kept coming back to was 1 Timothy 4:7, which tells us to train ourselves for godliness. Over the summer I learned the amount of focus that is necessary to see growth in my life. I learned how certain habits are critical if I am going to walk in the power of the Spirit. I learned how much I need to put myself in the path of God’s grace so I may receive that power.

As I come back, I hope I can be a better pastor, better serving our church and community, and better serving our Savior. It means doing less of some things and more of other things. I look forward to seeking the Lord together with you, fulfilling his purpose and reaching the potential God has for us individually, as families, and as a church.

Thanks again for the trust you gave me for a summer sabbatical.

Faithfully Yours,

Pastor Sean
