“May Darkness Flee”
By Joy Lopes

I want to share with you my struggle of the past few months, but first let me share with you the greatness of our Lord: Our God is a loving and compassionate Father. He is a constant source of comfort. His mercies are unchanging, never-failing, overflowing, and never-ceasing. And, his grace is an ocean we are an engulfed in. We are His creation; we have a purpose: to glorify this majestic savior, and enjoy Him for all eternity.

But, I have discovered, it is so easy to fall away from this purpose. We were made to worship, but sin has corrupted this ability. I have been made painfully aware of that corruption. For the past few months I have found myself not worshipping my Lord, but rather worshipping pain. This sounds so twisted and wrong, but that’s because it is twisted and it is wrong. But, it was so easy to do. I kept pain locked inside of me, and I didn’t want anyone to know; to know that I was hurting, and that I was idolizing this hurt. I became a like a safe, filled with darkness, that only I could open. And, I did open it- to look on my sorrow over and over again. As the psalm says, “Darkness was my closest friend” (Psalm 88).
But, why are we so obsessed with pain? We worship it in secret, yet hide it from those who care the deepest for us. I think this is because it becomes something that we can ‘control’.
Do not let your pain become something you keep even from your heavenly Father. For then it has become an idol. Jesus longs to hear our griefs and sorrows. He is a Father who will never abandon. He is present even in our weeping and despair; a tender savior drawing us to His arms. Cry out to him in your grief and sadness and He will answer you! I know this to be true. I know the great power of my Savior; because He drew me from the depths and darkness has fled far from me.
