VBS Wrap-Up

by Carrie Verbosky

“He took a little child and had him stand among them.  ‘Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me…'”
Mark 9:36-37b

Vacation Bible School is a program that ministers to the children of our church, their friends and the community.  This year we had a huge number of awesome teens step up to be helpers and even leaders. We had wonderful adults who planned and organized in the classrooms, kitchen, crafts, music, and drama.  Each part of VBS takes not one person but a team of people to make it a success. Planning starts months before VBS even begins.

The last several years we have drawn more and more children that do not attend our church – making VBS an outreach ministry. This year we had close to 100 kids registered and over 40 of them not from NLICC! Children play a significant and important part in VBS outreach- we had a 6th grader who brought 3 friends from her neighborhood (the max that would fit in her Mom’s car!). For families of young children it is an opportunity to be involved in missions in our neighborhood through invitation and prayer.

Thank you to everyone for being involved this year whether it was giving your time, food, or craft supplies. I encourage all to continue to look for opportunities to minister to our own children and also the children of our neighbors and friends throughout the year.

Please commit to attending the Parenting to the Glory of God Seminar August 8th and 9th as a way to encourage us in raising our own children in the nurture and discipline of the Lord and to help us support one another in the parenting our covenant children.  Even if you are not a parent  you will be equipped to encourage others in their parenting and minister the hope of the gospel to those children under your care.

Children are the gift and blessing of the Lord. This conference focuses on the promises of God for our children, the instruction God gives to us, and the hope God offers in Christ for our children. Parenting is about a person, not just a method. This conference is for all parents regardless of your children’s age. It is profitable to: offer big picture vision for children, offer hope for parents, see the wisdom of God’s Word, experience the valuable resource of the covenant community in parenting. Please notify the church office if you plan to attend. *Contact the church office if lack of childcare is problematic.

Nursery Help Needed
Karsta Toscano is looking for two people to help in the nursery.  One person will serve as a nursery supervisor just one Sunday a month.  The nursery supervisor checks children into the service before the service and then checks them back out to their parents afterwards.  The other person will serve on a weekly basis during the Sunday School hour.  She tries to keep the same people there first thing in the morning because often this is the first time the younger babies are entering the nursery and it is very comforting for them to see the same face week after week.  You may serve for three or six months at a time so that you won’t have to give up adult Sunday School for a whole year.  We are blessed with many new babies and more on the way and Karsta would like the extra warm arms and hearts ready!  Contact Karsta if you can help.

Women’s Bible Study for Fall
We have decided on a study for the Fall – The Promised One – Seeing Jesus in Genesis by Nancy Guthrie.  It will be on Tuesday mornings from 9:30-11:30 and will begin September 9th.  Childcare will be available. More details to come!

Looking for a childcare worker for Women’s Bible Study on Tuesday mornings beginning September 9th
Contact Christine in the office (540)786-4848 if you are interested.

Do you have an interest in an Evening Women’s Bible Study for Fall?
Are you interested in being a part of a weekly women’s Bible study in the evening beginning in September?  We’d study the same book as the Tuesday morning class – The Promised One – Seeing Jesus in Genesis by Nancy Guthrie over 20 weeks.  If so, let us know what evenings are best for you at wm@nlicc.org.  If there is no interest we will not have it as an offering, so please let us know!

Bulletin Folding
Summer is a great time to fold bulletins – older children are out of school and can help prepare for the worship service! Do you have a couple hours on a Friday afternoon you can spare? Sign up HERE to fold bulletins after 1 pm some Friday. Takes about 2 hours (faster if you bring a friend!) Questions? Ask Pam in the office.

From Kathryne:

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Matthew 6:21

Lord willing, tomorrow I will be heading to New Hampshire with my youngest , Paige, to enjoy some R&R before she returns to JMU for her junior year.  She has spent the summer working for a cleaning service owned by a Christian couple called “Maid in Heaven” and has learned some valuable skills for cleaning her own home someday.  She commented recently on the enormous amount of stuff that people accumulate in the large, extravagant homes she has been asked to clean.  I was proud to hear her say this was not what she wanted to aspire to, and I hope she will remain true to that youthful conviction. This has also caused me to examine my priorities and where my treasure lies. What do I think and talk about the most? Is it my next home improvement project or recipe I want to try, or is it my current pet peeves with family members? Or is it what the Lord is doing in my own heart to change me by the power of His Holy Spirit through His Word? Thanks be to God for His Word and the treasure it is to hide in my heart.(Ps. 119:11) May it clean up the sinful clutter still residing in the corners and closets and fill every room there with thoughts, words, and actions that glorify Him.
